Kyoto is known worldwide as a cherry blossom photography destination, but cherry blossom season is also one of the busiest times for visitors in all of Japan. How do you take solo travel portraits among the blossoms without crowds in the way? Here is what I've learned.

🙅 How to avoid the crowds

Strategy 1: 6–8 a.m. is the golden window

Tour groups arrive at the sights around 8:30 at the earliest. Get up 1.5 hours earlier and you can have almost every popular spot to yourself.

Strategy 2: Choose lesser-known alternatives

Philosopher's Path too crowded? Try the nearby Takano River bank, where the cherry blossoms are just as beautiful with a tenth of the people.

Strategy 3: Use technique to beat the crowds

💡 Photographer's tip: In cherry blossom season, I recommend an early-morning shoot (7:00–9:00). Wear mostly solid colors (white, beige, light pink) and avoid busy outfits.
